Andorra

Thanks to its user-friendly and picturesque ski slopes - as well as its phenomenal shopping opportunities – Andorra is one of the hottest travel destinations in Europe, and it’s certainly not because of its grandiose size! At just 468 sq km, this tiny country is about half as big as New York City or a third the size of London. Located in the southwestern part of the continent, veritably sandwiched between Spain and France, Andorra is particularly popular with other Europeans, though people the world over come here to enjoy the high life that the affluent Principality has to offer. For those not from the region, Andorra is frequently included as part of a longer, more expansive journey around Southern Europe, and for good reason: its location makes it the ideal pit stop and/or launching pad in a trip around the rest of the Continent, not to mention the fact that it’s a mere hop, skip and jump to North Africa. Though landlocked, the country has a number of summertime resorts that nicely complement the winter resorts for which it is better known. And though it may not be the only reason people flock here year round, shopping is definitely on everyone’s itinerary! Though the Euro is its currency, Andorra it is not part of the European Union and that gives it leave to sell a wide variety of products that don’t have EU tariffs attached. In essence, Andorra is one big duty-free shop and it’s shelves are loaded with all the usual suspects, including liquor, cigarettes, perfume, candy, jewelry and any other luxury product on which governments worldwide impose heavy taxes. So be sure to keep Andorra at the top of your list for the next time you head to the region (and bring us some duty free chocolate!). ~ WBB Staff Writer
